Lent Morning Seminar
Charity, Truth & the Common Good
Saturday 20 February 2010 9:30am - 1pmRoom M35, 1st Floor, Main Building, Ormskirk Campus
Led by Rod Garner Session
Fee: £9 and £7 (retired/unwaged)
This morning seminar will examine the first social encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI.
It is an important and timely document responding to many pressing concerns of the contemporary world. It addresses global economics, technological advances, civil society and the care of the environment.
To these issues Pope Benedict brings a searching intelligence and the belief that love in truth - caritas in veritate must be the guiding principle behind human and economic development. This fundamental religious principle is easily overlooked or ignored when, as we have seen, market forces, human greed and short-term profit hold sway.
This promises to be a fascinating morning and will be of help and interest to individuals or groups with a concern for social justice and the common good.
I am pleased that the Revd Nicholas Anderson, Vicar of St. Ann, Rainhill will be with us to guide our thinking.
Pre-seminar reading will be issued two weeks before the morning and, on request, I can provide copies of the encyclical letter for £2.95.
My intention is to hold a linked seminar to this morning later in the year that will be devoted to the highly acclaimed book,
Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? by Michael Sandel, Harvard political philosopher and the BBC Reith Lecturer 2009.
More details in the Spring.
