Spring Seminars

Martin Luther: Complex Revolutionary
Saturday 13 March 2010 9:30am - 1pm
Cornerstone Building, Haigh Street, Liverpool
Led by Rod Garner Session
Fee: £9 and £7 (retired/unwaged)

Luther changed the destiny of Europe and split it into rival Protestant and Catholic camps.
He urged Christians to read the Bible for themselves, placed men and women in charge of their spiritual destinies and defied the power of Rome and some of the doctrines it was dubiously founded on.
By turn he was courageous, brilliant, stubborn, prejudiced, vulgar and driven. Above all, he was a man of tireless energy and conviction whose impact on his own and later ages continues to fascinate.
This morning seminar will offer an audio visual presentation of his achievements and failings and will draw on a recent visit that I made to Wittenberg - the German town that Luther would make famous following the publication of his controversial 95 theses on the eve of All Saints 1517.
To understand Luther better is to have a clearer grasp of some of the basic issues confronting the Church today and its troubled relationship with Judaism.
Pre-seminar reading will be issued two weeks before the morning.

Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-up Idealists
Saturday 8 May 2010 9:30am - 1pm
Cornerstone Building, Haigh Street, Liverpool
Led by Rod Garner Session
Fee: £9 and £7 (retired/unwaged)

In a complex world of competing moral values and a growing hostility to religious claims, on what grounds do we stake our moral convictions?
When the poor suffer and wickedness flourishes; when our consciences are troubled but we keep silent, in fear of appearing judgemental of others, how do we make clear moral judgments?
This morning seminar will offer an approach to moral seriousness that sets aside oversimplification and dogmatism (biblical or otherwise) with the aim of recovering the vocabulary of morality - reason, reverence, evil and hope - that enables us to face today's urgent questions with some conviction and integrity.
We shall be drawing on the recent award winning book Moral Clarity by Susan Neiman and the seminar will be of use to faith leaders and individuals who want to do the right thing for the best of reasons.
Pre-seminar reading will be sent out two weeks before the morning.
