Church Choir

Music at Holy Trinity

Music is central to the worshipping life of Holy Trinity. From the earliest days of the parish in 1837, there was a choir singing for services. Today, Holy Trinity is home to a very strong musical tradition, and the choir sings at two services during the week: Sung Eucharist at 10am on Sunday, and Choral Evensong at 7pm on Wednesday in term time. Throughout the year, there are many festal occasions: Advent, Christmas, Easter and so on when the choir’s involvement plays a major role in the church’s celebrations. They are also involved in concert performances and each year hold fundraising events – a Summer Recital in July, and the ‘Carols & Mince Pies’ event in December – great fun for choir and audiences alike.

In previous years, the choir has been invited to take part in more significant musical events. In 2011, they were invited to join the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Huddersfield Choral Society and both Liverpool Cathedral choirs for a performance of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, ‘the Symphony of a Thousand’. The initial performance was in Liverpool Cathedral conducted by the Philharmonic’s conductor Vasily Petrenko, and later that year, the choir travelled to Porto for a repeat performance.

The highlight of the choir year is the annual visit to a Cathedral to sing for a week in the absence of the resident choir. This tradition was started in 1964 by the then Director of Music, David Bowman, and over the years, the choir has visited most cathedrals in the UK.

We welcome enquires throughout the year from adults who wish to join, or from parents of children of potential choristers. With plenty of opportunities for boys and girls to sing, learn, develop, make new friends and have fun, there is no better place in the town than Holy Trinity Choir.
